Why are we opposing desal?
  • Desal threatens Haverstraw Bay, a crucial nursery for many fish species in both the Hudson and the Atlantic. And Suez/United Water wants to take water for desal from the Hudson only 3.5 miles downstream from Indian Point nuclear power plant, exposing Rockland residents to tritium and strontium-90 in their drinking water.
  • Pay now or pay later: Pay now to ensure we win this David vs. Goliath battle against Suez/United Water, or we will pay later with even higher water bills in the future!
So we’re fighting desal for the sake of the environment and our health, and because of Suez/United Water's rate hikes.

David Amram, Tom Chapin and Jeremy Wall, our guest artists, will enchant, beguile and rile you! We’ll hear folk, classical/jazz and world music. They are master musicians as well as true humanitarians stepping up to the plate for Rockland. Please step up to the plate for them! For more on David, Tom and Jeremy please scroll down this page.

Proceeds from tickets go through the Sierra Club Foundation, and are tax-deductible. If you can't make the event but want to make an online donation, you can do it through our partner Riverkeeper by clicking here.

At the end of the event there will be a drawing for a basket of cheer for one lucky winner!

David Amram
Musician, composer, conductor, storyteller—few people have left their mark on the world of music as David Amram has. A very short list of his collaborators would include Dizzy Gillespie, Jack Kerouac, Leonard Bernstein, Eugene Ormandy, Sir James Galway, Charles Mingus, John Frankenheimer, Langston Hughes, Elia Kazan, Thelonious Monk, Johnny Depp, Hunter S. Thompson, Arthur Miller, Odetta, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Arlo Guthrie, and Pete Seeger. Among Amram’s many accomplishments are playing French horn in legendary jazz bands of Charles Mingus, Dizzy Gillespie and Lionel Hampton; composing the scores for the classic films “The Manchurian Candidate” (1962) and “Splendor in the Grass” (1960), and the Beat documentary movie “Pull My Daisy” (1959) narrated by Jack Kerouac; pioneering the first-ever public Jazz/Poetry readings in NYC with Jack Kerouac (1957); becoming the first composer-in-residence with the New York Philharmonic at the request of Leonard Bernstein(1966); composing the opera "12th Night" with Shakespeare's text adapted by Joseph Papp (1968); composing “THIS LAND: Symphonic Variations on a Song by Woody Guthrie, a symphony based on Woody Guthrie's “This Land is Your Land” (with live CD recording to be released in 2014); championing world music decades before the term was invented: playing at Farm Aid with Willie Nelson (1986-2013); and recounting his amazing life's story in three books. Now 83, Amram continues to work non-stop as a classical composer, multi-instrumentalist, band leader, lecturer (in five languages) and guest conductor around the world.
